Classic Pokemon on 3DS Won’t Support Restore Points

Classic Pokemon on 3DS Won’t Support Restore Points

Next month is a big one for Pokemon fans; February marks 20 years since the original Pocket Monsters was released in Japan, and to celebrate Nintendo is bringing the classics – Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow – are coming to the 3DS Virtual Console. This is really great news for those of us who cherish our precious memories growing up, embarking for the very first time to be the very best, like no one ever was. This time around the classic game will enjoy one modern upgrade: when you head to the cable club, you’ll be able to connect wirelessly with other trainers to trade and battle Pokemon.

There’s one modern convenience that won’t be included, however. Restore points (or save / restore states) have been a staple in emulator gaming for a long time, and have been included in every Virtual Console game on the 3DS until now. Nintendo has disabled restore points and backup saves, most likely to prevent people exploiting the trading feature to duplicate Pokemon. While this is a slight inconvenience, the Pokemon games all have really nice saving options, allowing you to pause and save your game at any time anyway, so I’m not particularly bummed out by this little omission. You engage in some classic Pokemon action on your 3DS February 27.
