The latest update to DC Universe Online will give players access to the new Research and Development system, a new sort of crafting system stylized specifically for the game’s superhero theme. When players reach level ten, they will be directed to their faction’s Research and Development contact for an introduction to the system. R&D stations can be found throughout the game, so players will just about always have access to it.



Here’s how the R&D system works: First, players will have to find the plans for the items they want to make in the actual game world. These can be rewards for quests or drops from enemies, or they can just be found lying around. Then, players will have to gather the materials for their plans, which too are scattered around the open world. Players can also turn their unused items into crafting materials as well, and bosses will drop extremely useful elements and plans to use in R&D.

When you go to an R&D station, you can create a new type of item called an Equipment Mod. These mods socket into your existing gear to give you bonuses. You can also create superior consumables that provide stat buffs in addition to healing.

The R&D system can be used by both free and paying players, so no one needs to feel left out.
