Digital Distribution Future Still Eighty Percent Short

None

Although many consumers prefer to own physical copies of their video games, the game industry has put a major focus on a digital distribution future. With hard drives constantly growing in size, an increasingly larger supply of downloadable arcade games, and even full games being offered as downloads, one would think that the digital distribution future was upon us. For all those who still like to get a box and disc for their money, the Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) has some good news.

According to the findings of a recent report from the EMA (via GameIndustry.biz), eighty to ninety percent of video game purchases in 2009 were disc or cartridge sales. EMA boss Bo Andersen states “Digital distribution is clearly an important segment of the home entertainment market and will continue to grow in market share in the coming year. While it is tempting for industry outsiders to say ‘disc is dead,’ as the saying goes, reports of its demise are grossly exaggerated.”
