Disney Infinity 3.0 is Finally Tapping into the Classics

Disney Infinity 3.0 is Finally Tapping into the Classics

Did you catch the leak? No, probably not, since Disney was all over that. A Chinese website called Taobao leaked images of 11 NFC figures from Disney Infinity 3.0, a number of websites jumped on the revelation, and then Disney went ahead and made people pull the pictures down. Which, of course, makes everything seem seem super accurate instead of some baseless rumor.

Don’t worry – you can still enjoy the speculation. The Disney Infinity 3.0 leak didn’t involve many spoilers. Unless, of course, you consider the company finally doing what it should have done with this series all along a big shock. See, Disney should always have been tapping into its back catalog when it came to its Disney Infinity line. People love those old movies and shows. Except, it always seemed to focus more on what was new and hot. Yet, with Disney Infinity 3.0, it seems to be making the “right” decision.

A few of the leaked Disney Infinity figures were “new hotness” characters. Supposedly all five characters from Inside Out , a Disney Pixar movie that will be released in two months, will get their own figures. Which makes sense, since the company did that with Guardians of the Galaxy in Disney Infinity 2.0. And adding Olaf from Frozen is only good business sense, because kids are still going crazy over that movie. It’s the remaining five characters that show a smarter shift.

The classic characters tap into fan favorites that, frankly, should have been part of Disney Infinity since the original installment. Mickey and Minnie Mouse both appeared, which boggles the mind since the iconic couple of course belonged in the game. So did Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron Legacy. One can only hope that duo also receive their own Play Set. Then, there’s Mulan. There has been a serious lack of original Disney Princesses in the realm of Disney Infinity, and Mulan’s inclusion remedies that. Finally, Jasmine and Rapunzel have a friend!

Should these leaks prove accurate, and it seems they are since Disney called for everything to be removed, it would be the first entry where half of the starting roster relies on classics. That’s only right. The Disney company has been around for 90 years. People of all ages have grown up with and loved with these characters. Instead of attempting to capitalize on recent releases, which went so well in the case of The Lone Ranger , the company should give us what we want. And what we want is to play as characters we care about.

Disney Infinity 3.0 is Finally Tapping into the Classics

Of course, this leak could also be about Disney running out of newer titles it could cash in on. Disney Infinity and Disney Infinity 2.0 both did a pretty good job of featuring the newest movies and characters, but things are rather tapped out. Which means Disney Infinity 3.0 is free to be what we all would want it to be – a title exploring old favorites. There’s only so much that can be done before the developers finally have to throw up their hands and say, “Okay! Here are those Beauty and the Beast , Lion King , Wall-E , Peter Pan , and Winnie the Pooh toys you wanted!”

I mean, sure. We’ve seen some cursory support shown to old favorites in the first two Disney Infinity games. Aladdin got its due, and a handful of single characters from our childhoods returned. With Disney Infinity 3.0, however, it looks like Disney might be seizing an opportunity. If the leak proves true and two duos from older series appear, then we could finally receive an installment that lets us open up digital Toy Boxes to our childhoods.
