EVE Online Creators Ending VR Development

EVE Online Creators Ending VR Development

Creators of the seemingly evergreen EVE Online , CCP Games, have decided to back out of the virtual reality market. Their three existing VR games will continue to be supported, but no new titles will be developed. CCP Games has shutdown their entire VR department and will be relegating their support of current VR titles to a sort of side project.

EVE Valkyrie , EVE Gunjack , and Spark will all be available for purchase and play still. The first is a sci-fi shooter played with a controller, the second a mobile spin off, and the third, uses motion control VR and pits players against each other in a TRON -like game of dodge ball.

When questioned by Rock, Paper, Shotgun, CCP Games’ CEO, Hilmar Veigar, revealed that the biggest reason for ending their VR development was timing. He likened VR to the Internet or mobile phones. This system and devices went through many phases of popularity, dislike, and eventual household necessities. Veigar believes that VR will run very similar cycles, while eventually coming out on top. But seeing as how CCP Games is just a mid-level company, they cannot take the time and money to ride the roller coaster.
