Final Fantasy XIII-2 Sales Stifled

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Sales Stifled

None

Despite critical complaints, especially from Western media, Final Fantasy XIII was very much a commercial success. Its first week alone secured over 1.5 million sales. The sequel is out in the Land of the Rising Sun and, wonder of wonders, we have numbers! In its first week at retail, the PlayStation 3 edition of XIII-2 sold 524,000 units, selling through 62.06% of its stock. Its Xbox 360 counterpart sold only 10,000 units, moving 30.23% of games shipped.

Besides reiterating that the Xbox never caught on in Japan, this tells us that not only was XIII-2’s initial week less successful than the original game’s, but Square Enix was able to secure less than half as many orders from retailers as before.

Courtesy of Andriasang, we have speculation from Media Create that this drop in interest is due, in part, to a lack of excitement for the game among female gamers, surveys demonstrating that their interest fell from 31.3% to 22.2%. That said, it’s also fairly likely that Final Fantasy XIII, the game Square Enix once said was designed with Japanese audiences in mind, failed to enrapture gamers beyond its initial, glimmering appeal.
