From The Last Guardian To Facebook

Yoshifusa Hayama was a producer on The Last Guardian, the highly-anticipated yet much-delayed next project from the team behind PlayStation 2 classics ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. Now making his home at Bossa Studios in London, a social games developer, Hayama intends to bring his tremendous experience working on big-name titles such as Shenmue and Final Fantasy X to, of all things, Facebook.

He wants to make Facebook’s first “masterpiece” game.

What defines a masterpiece in Hayama’s mind? “The problem is there’s no game that everyone loves,” he says, implying that a masterpiece game on Facebook would do exactly that, bringing around the gamers who deride social gaming as a trite and shallow medium. This isn’t the first time Hayama has left one development medium behind for another, either.

In the ‘90s, the producer went from arcade development to consoles. He feels that markets change, with time, and that, after this fundamental shift takes them away from their simple roots, he doesn’t want to be part of them anymore. It’s an unusual sentiment, running counter to the cries of critics for greater and greater complexity in game design, but, in some ways, an appealing one.
