Godzilla: Monster of Monsters Summary
Go, go, Godzilla!
The world’s favorite giant radioactive lizard. Godzilla: Monster of Monsters is an NES game first released in 1989 and developed by Toho. Developed following the success of the various Godzilla films, this NES game saw a formula unlike what would be seen in later Godzilla games.
The game had two playable monsters, the titular Godzilla and Mothra. For those unaware, Mothra is the more “peaceful” monster, and in some cases, is Godzilla’s “wife.” To that end, the player controls both of the monsters on a virtual gameboard. The board in question varied, as it represented the planet they were on. Godzilla films could get weird. The players then could move the duo around, akin to chess pieces. On each space, there was a hexagon. Once a player entered said space, the player could control their chosen monster on a 2D side-scrolling level. The objective for each board is clear: there are various enemy monsters, like Gigan, that you must defeat. When the board is cleared of all enemies, the player wins!
Upon release, the game saw positive reception. Several websites praise the game for its various maps, level detail, and general replayability.
Godzilla: Monster of Monsters Premise
There’s no out-and-out plot, as each board roughly follows the plot of each of the Godzilla Showa/Millennium movies. That said, the theme may change, but the objective does not. As such, do what Godzilla does best, and destroy all enemies! Expect Mothra, she’s on your side.
Godzilla: Monster of Monsters Main Characters
- Godzilla. The main lizard himself! He’s one of two playable characters. This one is based primarily on the Godzilla seen in the Showa/Millennium films. Not the same one found in the Legendary films, or even the original Godzilla.
- Mothra. The other playable character, she’s the soft touch to Godzilla’s atomic breath. She also has a different playstyle then him!
- King Ghidorah. Godzilla’s main arch-enemy. With three heads, it is easy to understand why! He’s also the largest enemy in the series and has more than a bone to pick with Godzilla.
- Mechagodzilla. Also known as Kiryu. Fun fact! The bones of the original Godzilla are used in this thing! It is controlled, at least in the movies, by a young pilot named Akane Yashiro. Or, at least, one of the various incarnations of Mechagodzilla is.
- Gigan. A bipedal creature with sickles for hands. Fought on planet Uranus. This kaiju was created as a weapon to conquer Earth.
- Baragon. A sort of lizard/rhino kaiju. He is fought on Saturn. Also, weirdly blamed Frankenstein’s monster. How in the world people mistake a giant lizard kaiju for a humanoid creature is frankly confusing. But it happened.
- Hedorah. A squid…mutant….thing, found and fought on Jupiter. In the movies, it grew and evolved, even becoming capable of flight. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen here.
- Varan. A green creature that looks somewhat similar to Godzilla. He can also fly, somehow. But to be fair, so can Godzilla, or at least, one of them. Varan is found on the red planet, Mars.
- Moguera. A robotic creature that vaguely resembles a duck. This guy is found on Earth.
- Gezora. This one also looks like a squid! But, much easier to understand. Also on Earth.
These are common enemies, found on each stage.
- Dogora. A strange, cell-like kaiju. This one is honestly quite hard to describe.
- Gohten. This one is a drill! Wait, is it even a kaiju then? Nope! It’s a spaceship, designed by humans, for humans, mostly to take on Godzilla.
- Gotengo. Also a drill! Also a spaceship! Wait, why is it an enemy then? Well, if humans are there, then Godzilla’s gotta stop.
- Manda. This one is more akin to a sea dragon, or a very big, very nasty snake.
- Markalite Cannon. A giant cannon that can fire large rays. It comes out of a large, satellite dish.
- Maser Cannon. An anti-kaiju weapon. Honestly, can’t blame people for developing them.
- Matango. This one is just a fungus. Space fungus. Where they come from, no one knows.
- Natarl UFO. These are UFOs, as in, just UFOs.
- Super X. A flying spaceship, that, in the movies, was designed to defend the Japanese capital.
