Google Play’s Getting an Indie Game Festival

Google Play’s Getting an Indie Game Festival

Google’s decided to become a bigger supporter of indie gaming. How? By putting together its own indie gaming festival, which it’s calling the Indie Games Festival. The goal is to promote and acknowledge Android developers who will eventually be releasing their games on the Google Play store.

Independent developers whose studios have 15 employees or less are encouraged to apply by August 14. Their game will have to have been or be published between January 1 and December 31. On September 24, the Indie Games Festival will be held at San Francisco’s Terra Gallery, with people able to stop by for free and play some games.

Google’s Indie Games Festival is also a competition. People visiting will cast votes for the games they like best. There will also be judging during the showcase. Winning developers will get tickets to Google I/O 2017, Google ad campaigns, and Tango devices.

While the name is a little odd and generic, it does seem like the Google Play Indie Games Festival could prove to be quite the opportunity for developers. Getting Google’s support could make a big difference to a very small studio. And we already know size doesn’t matter, as small developers make great games all the time. Here’s hoping this goes well!
