While using the Unreal Engine has become the standard for games this generation, there are still a few companies out there who create their own game engines, id Software being one of them. However, rather than trying to license their new id Tech 5 Engine out to other companies, it will apparently only be made available to games being published by Bethesda.  According to comments made by John Carmack to Eurogamer, id Software believes the engine is too much of an advantage to let just anyone use it. Carmack states “It’s like, look, this is a competitive advantage and we want to keep it within games we publish – not necessarily exclusively to id or id titles, but if you’re going to make a game with id Tech 5 then it needs to be published by Bethesda, which I think is a fair thing.” From what we’ve seen of Rage, which is using id Tech 5, these statements make perfect sense. |
