Wolfenstein 3D Celebrates 20th Birthday In Your Browser

None

It isn’t just the fifteenth birthday of Cheat Code Central , y’know. Wolfenstein 3D has just hit the big two-oh, meaning that the entire first-person shooter genre as we know it is now almost old enough to legally drink.

To celebrate, Bethesda, which bought id Software in 2009 and thus owns the rights to the game, has released it as a free-to-play browser game, compatible with Chrome 16, Internet Explorer 9, Safari 5, and Firefox 11. In celebration, Steam is also listing the game as its Daily Deal, at 75% off, so if you don’t already have ready access to an offline version of the game, there you go.

Further, a commentary video has been released by Bethesda, which features director John Carmack talking about his experiences with the game and its development. It’s a great way to celebrate a fondly remembered classic, and perhaps a lesson in less-linear level design for today’s developers, who seem overly eager to chauffeur us from shooting alley to set-piece and back again.
