Soulcalibur has a history of guest characters. Soulcalibur II had The Legend of Zelda’ s Link, Tekken’ s Heihachi, and Spawn, depending on the version. You could make Xenosaga’ s KOS-MOS in Soulcalibur III . Soulcalibur IV also starred Darth Vader, Yoda, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed’ s Apprentice. God of Wars’ Kratos made it into Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny . And Assassin’s Creed’ s Ezio showed up in Soulcalibur V . We pretty much expect someone super cool to come up in every game. Soulcalibur VI does not disappoint, since The Witcher’ s Geralt will showing up to fight. And when it comes down to it, he may be the best inclusion of all.
Here’s the thing about Geralt showing up to this party. He is quite possibly the first character who feels like he could really fit in Soulcalibur . The other guest fighters were great. They were fun characters who adapted well in the moment. But do you really ever think someone from Star Wars , with their lightsabers, could be showing up to go toe-to-toe with Mitsurugi? Kratos is from a way different time period. But with Geralt, we have plenty of plausible reasons why he is a good fit.
Let’s start with Geralt’s toolkit. While he does wield secondary weapons in The Witcher series, like maces and axes, he primarily wields swords. To be more specific, a silver sword and steel sword. The rest of the Soulcalibur VI cast is similarly armed. Everyone has standard weaponry, which means he would fit in better than someone with a lightsaber or only uses their fists. He is on par with them and can stand toe-to-toe. Plus, since he is constantly finding new and better weapons in The Witcher , it would make it easy to offer additional weaponry for players to switch to in Soulcalibur VI .
There are also Geralt’s Signs. These are the sorts of magic used in The Witcher series for certain special abilities. We already know Soulcalibur is a series that is no stranger to the supernatural. Soul Edge and Soul Calibur are both magical swords. Cervantes is often an undead pirate. Raphael is a vampire. Aeon Calcos is a lizardman often known as Lizardman. Zasalamel uses magic all the time. Voldo is… Voldo. If Geralt starts using Signs for his special attacks, he will fit right in with the rest of the folks here. Plus, he is known for facing all sorts of supernatural creatures, so it only stands to reason he could appear here.
But the most important reason this could work is because of the portals. In The Witcher 3 , we see sorceresses like Yennefer and Keira use portals to get from one place to another. Geralt firmly asserts that he hates portals. Why? Because they can misfire and send someone where they did not intend to go. We already know that, in Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher novel The Lady of the Lake, Ciri goes through a Tor Zireael portal and ends up meeting Galahad from the Arthurian legends. This would be the perfect excuse to bring the actual Geralt from The Witcher into Soulcalibur VI and maybe have it actually be canon.
Really though, the best thing about this, above all other things, is that it means Soulcalibur VI will continue one of the series’ best trends. The crossovers are always a delight. Each time, they are handled well. Basically, they are a mix of hilarious and amazing. And with Geralt from The Witcher , it seems like Soulcalibur VI could have an opportunity to set a new bar for the cameo.
