Iwata Explains Lack of Wii 2 Talk

None

While it may still be slightly premature for hardware manufacturers to begin talking about their next consoles, people have been expecting Nintendo to announce the successor to the Wii due to its comparatively weaker horsepower and lack of HD visuals. According to statements made by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata to investors (via Eurogamer), the company has its reasons for staying silent.

Iwata states “We are of course studying and developing the next console to Wii. However, there is a big difference between studying a product and announcing what it is and when we will release it.” He continues “I am afraid to say that the history of entertainment is also the history of imitation. A great idea will promptly be copied unless protected through patents.” Further explaining he says “Therefore, we basically disclose information on our products as late as possible. We believe this is the best approach for the entertainment products we are developing.” While this may sound somewhat paranoid, we all remember how quickly other companies have implemented analog sticks, rumble technology, and motion controls after Nintendo brought these technologies to the gaming market.
