Kinect Heading To Windows In 2012

None

When the Kinect came out in 2010, Microsoft thought it would be an answer to the Wii’s quirky motion gaming system. But the Internet had other ideas. Since its release, gamers and hardware nuts have been repurposing their Kinects for all kinds of things: remote controlled cars, motions capture devices, even as a way to import a mountain-sized version of yourself into Minecraft.

However, before any of this was even possible, the community needed to find a way to connect their devices to their PCs, and obviously this was done with relative ease (and with Microsoft’s help ). Well, Microsoft is about to make it even easier by releasing a Windows version of the Kinect in 2012 (just like they had promised ).

There’s some optimism at Microsoft about the Kinect’s potential to drive non-video-game-related industries into unexplored realms. “I can guarantee you that 12 months from now, educational, academic, and commercial applications will look nothing like what they are today” said Alex Kipman, Kinect team leader. Kipman might be slightly overestimating the Kinect’s immediate potential in a couple of industries whose computers are notoriously out of date, but I’m not going to be the one to tell him. The little guy is just too excited.
