Main Series Pokemon Games Have Sold Over 200 Million

There are few brands as strong as the Pokemon brand. The games, the shows, the movies, the comics, the toys… In every facet of media and merchandise Pokemon has thrived, but it all started with Pocket Monsters . Video games have been the financial bread and butter for The Pokemon Company, and their longevity and replayability were made obvious as just recently we all scrambled to download the original Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow to our 3DS handhelds to play through for the first, second, or hundredth time.

Just how successful have these games been over the past 20 years? According to Yahoo! Japan, the main series games (think Blue and Red, X and Y ) have sold over 200 million units. That’s insane. That equates to over 10 million copies sold every single year since the games debuted on the Game Boy. That number would be much higher if spin-off titles like Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and Pokemon Stadium were included. Fads and trends may come and go, but Pokemon endures.
