Now that the Xbox One has been kicking around for six months now (as of Thursday, May 22) since its launch back in mid-November last year, you’d think that a redesign of the console would not be on the minds of those at Microsoft for at least a few years.
Apparently that’s not the case, according to the company’s senior principal creative director Carl Ledbetter.
Speaking with TotalXbox, Ledbetter and his team are already discussing possible designs for the Xbox One’s successor, hinting at on-going experiments as to the “ aesthetic of the future ” in which to incorporate into the next Xbox One’s new design.
” Even now the Xbox One is out, we’re not just sitting around thinking well, we’re done with that. We’re already thinking about: What is the future of games? Where can we go next? What is going to be the aesthetic of that? What is the posture of devices in the future? What do the input devices look like, and how do they behave? ” Ledbetter explained to TotalXbox.
” And so we’re actually testing ourselves, and the software people, and the creative people designing the content, to really push what that can be. And so we’re already starting to create piles of amazing things, where we don’t even know whether they’re real yet, but it starts to test us about what is the aesthetic of the future, ” he added.

The final design of the Xbox One came about after extensive testing across several prototypes. According to TotalXbox, over 100 different Xbox One prototypes were constructed, with 200 possible controller designs and 75 possible ventilation covers.
The design of the Xbox One we now all know was declared as a “ meaningful breakthrough ” by Ledbetter earlier on this year, back in January.
“ One thing is for certain, ” he began. “ Meaningful, breakthrough products aren’t easy to create–otherwise everyone would do it. With Xbox One we have created an amazing product that truly is a next generation product for Xbox customers. It’s one of those products that don’t happen very often, and it is a moment in our careers that we will all carry with us for years to come. ”
