Microsoft Exec Clarifies New Xbox TV Policy

Yesterday we reported that new TV content would be coming to the Xbox One. This caused some gamer’s eyebrows to rise, wondering if it would steal attention away from their “games-first” campaign Phil Spencer laid out recently. Now, Microsoft explains how one will not interfere with the other.

In a recent interview, Jordan Levin revealed that while refocusing their efforts on making their console THE video game destination of this generation is a priority, there is also room to incorporate new content (like the upcoming TV lineup). “It’s also probably worth saying that none of the activity we’re pursuing is coming at the expense any of the investment that’s been made in the platform overall or gaming overall. There isn’t shifting of resources away from gaming to this.” Said Levin.

Many have criticized Microsoft since the launch of the Xbox One, feeling they have mistakenly attempted to make their console a media hub instead of centering on games as a focal point.

Levin reiterates that their resolve of making gaming on the Xbox One their #1 focus is still strong, but that the new TV content has a place on the market as well. “…the nice thing about playing in a device like this” Levin reveals, “is that’s nonlinear, is there’s no finite space restrictions. We’re simply a new service that is meant to increase the value proposition for the audience, and if they want to opt in, great, and if they don’t, then we’ll react and respond. But we’re not…there’s nothing that’s getting displaced in the process of what we’re trying to build.”

New TV content coming to Xbox Live includes a new show by the creators of Robot Chicken , as well as a Steven Spielberg backed Halo TV series.
