Microsoft’s Twitch Competitor Re-branded

Microsoft’s Twitch Competitor Re-branded

Microsoft’s streaming platform, formerly known as Beam, is undergoing a few changes. “A whole new world of possibilities” is opening up as the service gets a new name, along with several new features. The service is now called Mixer.

Mixer aims to separate itself from Twitch through interactivity and low latency. Viewers can directly communicate with streamers and make requests, for example. Some developers are reportedly even looking at incorporating Mixer features in-game.

The biggest-advertised feature for Mixer is co-streaming. This feature, now available, lets up to four users combine their streams into a single, split-screen stream with one chat. This feature is for both PC and Xbox One, and will be updated in the future with the ability to invite friends to co-stream directly from the Guide.

Co-streaming does not have to involve the same activity, nor does it have to be from the same source. Users can stream game, PC, mobile and even just video feeds, and mix them all together as desired. Mixer is also working on a mobile app, Xbox One dashboard integration, a content channel, and production studio at Microsoft.
