Neal Stephenson Wants To Fight You

None

Science and historical fiction author Neal Stephenson, perhaps most famous for cyberpunk classic Snow Crash , is something of a sword buff. It’s understandable, then, that he is dissatisfied with the state of weaponized melee combat in the games of today, much less the dearth of options regarding fighting style and the abstraction of combat necessitated by controllers designed more around shooting guns than swinging swords.

His solution is to make CLANG, a one-on-one arena game that will serve as the basis for so much more, an engine that will allow others to create similarly intensive sword combat games beyond the scope of the initial project. Intending to use the Razer Hydra, or other similar devices with Sixense technology, the game is currently using a Kickstarter campaign with a goal of $500,000. It currently sits at over $175,000 after only a few days. Part of this can be attributed to the page’s introduction video, which features wry humor, delivered in an unbroken deadpan by Stephenson himself, and an appropriate cameo by Valve’s own Gabe Newell.

There is, as of yet, no word on a release date, even assuming the project is funded. “These things, they take time.”
