Nearly Half Of All Gaming Kickstarters Have Succeeded

None

If you’ve taken a breath at any point in the last few years, you’ve probably heard of Kickstarter, the crowd funding website where anybody can contribute to the creation of various creative projects. The past few months have seen Kickstarter become a friend to small and indie game developers in particular, with endeavors such as Double Fine’s upcoming adventure, inXile’s Wasteland 2, and Harebrained Schemes’ Shadowrun Returns, among others, all proving to be massive successes.

Today, AppsBlogger has posted the official success and failure rates for Kickstarter’s various projects for the first time ever, and while the majority of gaming-related endeavors have failed, the numbers can be still be seen as somewhat encouraging.

The report shows that 43 percent of the 1,729 game projects have succeeded, about two percent higher than Kickstarter’s total average success rate. Out of the 13 listed project categories (including dance, music, comics, and the like), gaming ranks tenth, although it has raised 22.7 million dollars total, good for fourth overall. Developers definitely have no shortage of backers either, as nearly 500,000 people have contributed to the well-being of their desired games.

Now, one may see gaming Kickstarters’ 57 percent failure rate as disheartening, but considering that most of these future titles wouldn’t even have had an opportunity to be entertained without the service, I’d say the indie game industry has found a pretty good friend for itself over the past few years. Here’s to its continued growth and success.
