NetherRealm Puts Down Mortal Kombat For Now

NetherRealm Puts Down Mortal Kombat For Now

None

The latest iteration of the Mortal Kombat franchise has been quite a success for NetherRealm Studios. Sure, it may be banned in Australia , but it’s garnered all kinds of praise from critics in the states—even winning one of SPIKE TV’s VGA awards over the weekend.

But, even with all of its success, NetherRealm is planning to take a break from Mortal Kombat for a while, opting instead to focus on a new project. Ed Boon, head of NetherRealm Studios, told GameSpot that they would eventually return to the MK, but are pulling the plug for the time being. This also means that the studio is not planning to release any more DLC for the current MK title.

However, Boon’s statements seem to contradict a recently filed ratings petition in the UK for a “Mortal Kombat Komplete.” Many insiders think that this will be some kind of re-released version of Mortal Kombat with all of the DLC included. Though, it’s possible that NetherRealm has already completed this project and is now focusing their attention elsewhere.

It’s possible that NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat hiatus is due to their newly minted Batman title: Arkham City Lockdown. Lockdown was released for iOS devices last week and has been a pleasant surprise for mobile gamers. This could be purely speculation on my part, but I’m going to keep my fingers crossed anyway.
