Nielsen Study Shows Gamers Eager For Sequels

Nielsen Study Shows Gamers Eager For Sequels

None

A recent study by the Nielsen Company shows that gamers are most excited for game sequels, regardless of how much they complain about them. The group recently analyzed which console titles were most anticipated for the rest of 2012, and few of them were original IPs. In fact, of the most anticipated games for all three consoles, only four games were original properties of any sort.

The Xbox list was topped with titles such as Halo 4, Assassin’s Creed III, and Max Payne 3, with only Kinect: Star Wars sitting in at number eight as the sole original IP.

The PS3 charts were led by Assassin’s Creed III, Max Payne 3, and Madden NFL 13, with not a single original IP or console exclusive on the list.

Finally, while the Wii list contains both Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story, its users are most excited for Madden NFL 13, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, and Battleship, making Battleship, of all things, the most anticipated game that isn’t a sequel.

While it’s possible that these results show that gamers actually prefer sequels over original IPs, they also show something else. There are simply more sequels out on the market than there are original games. The gaming community has to be hyped about something, and if all the big name releases are all sequels, that’s what gamers will naturally gravitate to.
