Nintendo Consoles Finally Get DLC Support

Nintendo Consoles Finally Get DLC Support

None

Everyone who owned a Wii this last generation was patiently waiting for the day that Nintendo would give in and allow us to have DLC in our games. However, outside of a few rare instances like Rock Band, Wii games pretty much came out as-is. Well that’s all about to change with this brand new generation of Nintendo consoles.

Following the ludicrous Nintendo 3DS price cut down to one hundred and seventy dollars, Nintendo has announced that they will up updating the 3DS eShop to allow users to download paid DLC for their games. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that this functionality will be implemented by the year’s end and that it should allow users to download things such as new levels, but not things that would give them an unfair advantage in an online game like stat increases. However, Iwata did say that third-party publishers can create and manage their own downloadable add-ons as well.

This functionality will not just be coming to the 3DS. Supposedly, the Wii U will launch with the ability to obtain DLC updates and features. Iwata said that Nintendo intends to greatly increase its presence in the digital market over the next three years. He also said that he hopes to remove gamers’ hesitation over buying goods on a virtual store.

Might this mean that we may see digital distribution main-line titles for the Wii U sometime in the future? We can only hope.
