Nintendo Getting Online Service And New 2D Mario

Nintendo Getting Online Service And New 2D Mario

Nintendo has been pretty busy getting ready for the launch of their Wii U this summer, but that hasn’t stopped them from finally gaining some ground in their online services. Yesterday, in an investor presentation, Satoru Iwata revealed their new “Nintendo Network.” According to Iwata, the network will handle “competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content.” It’s probably safe to think about it the same way you think about the PlayStation Network or Xbox LIVE.

The first game that will utilize the Nintendo Network will be Mario Kart 7, which hit the 3DS last month. Players will be able to take advantage of a “Community” building function in this latest installment of Mario’s Kart Racer.

Iwata also indicated that the Network will eventually enable Nintendo to push digital content to 3DS users: “This concept was built into the design of the Nintendo 3DS, and we already have the necessary infrastructure,” Iwata said. “We will prepare the same infrastructure for the Wii U. However, we have not decided the concrete timing of when we will start it.”

The presentation also revealed the company’s plan to release a “totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D.” The game is reportedly heading to the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year, but no official announcement has been made.
