Nintendo’s Investors Want An iOS Game

Whether you like it or not, mobile phones will be a big part of portable gaming’s future. Phones will always have one advantage over portable consoles like the 3DS or the upcoming PS Vita: people don’t leave home without their phones. Even if the mobile phone platform isn’t a perfect gaming environment, it’s better than nothing when you’re at a family reunion.

Executives at Nintendo, who have consistently been trying to ignore the advancements in mobile phone gaming, are finally starting to feel the pressure. Their investors have started to put the squeeze on them to dive into phone-gaming after sales of their 3DS and Wii consoles have started to dwindle.

“Smartphones are the new battlefield for the gaming industry,” said Masamitsu Ohki, a fund manager with the Tokyo-based Stats Investment Management Company. “Nintendo should try to either buy its way into this platform or develop something totally new.”

Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata has always been steadfast in his refusal to allow Nintendo’s titles to appear on another company’s platform. However, The Pokémon Company recently announced that they would be releasing a title for the iOS and Android platforms, and this announcement caused the biggest spike in share prices that Nintendo had seen for months.

Will Link and Mario will be next to make the jump to the mobile phone market? We’ll have to wait and see.
