The next-wave in the next-gen could very well be virtual reality. We’ve tried it in the past, with dismal results. However (with the Oculus VR), new innovations have some in the industry considering it a real possibility this time around.
One such man is former EA exec David De Martini, who literally put off retirement in order to work on the up and coming project. “”I was ready to potentially retire to the golf course, and this was just so ground-breaking that it took me out of playing golf three days a week. The potential was just so large that it was really something I’d been searching for at least the last five years within EA. It’s the most exciting thing I’ve been a part of since at least Rock Band at EA.” Said De Martini.
The Oculus VR was another crowd-funded project that hopes to finally take us where we’ve never been in gaming: truly immersive VR environments. Sony has developed similar goggles over the years, but Oculus has already made strides in becoming the definitive name in its field of VR, with all eyes currently on them.
Martini also believe that HD has gone about as far as it’s going to go in regards to consumer appeal, and the game industry needs to shift focus to other avenues. He states Oculus does just that, stating, “No one cares about greater visual fidelity anymore. It’s already good enough. We don’t need things to look even better; we need the experience to fundamentally change, and the Oculus platform is a fundamental change to how people will experience games.”
