OnLive Completes Third Round of Funding; On target for Winter Launch Date

None

According to an article posted at Reuters by Gabriel Madway, OnLive, the upcoming cloud-based, streaming game service, has finished its “Series C funding round.”

OnLive is seeking more funds to be able to install more servers and infrastructure before its Winter 2009 launch date. “Our projections have changed. Our projections originally for the first year were less than the number of people that have so far signed up for beta. So I guess we underestimated,” said OnLive CEO Steve Perlman.

Currently, OnLive has three data centers up and running just to house the overwhelming beta demand, and now they’re looking to set up an additional two centers to bring the total up to five before the device hits the market.

Though the actual amount of raised this time around was not disclosed, Perlman did state that the sum was a “large investment at a large valuation.” New investors included AT&T Media Holdings Inc and Lauder Partners, while former investors Autodesk, Maverick Capital, and Warner Bros. pitched in yet again.

While we find it hard to believe that OnLive will launch on time as they continue to claim, we are starting to think the service may actually see the light of day. After all, nine massive game publishers including Ubisoft, Take Two, and EA have already signed on to support the service.
