PewDiePie and Other Youtube Celebrities Speak Out Against Nintendo’s Ad Revenue Sharing Policy

PewDiePie, the most subscribed-to content creator on Youtube and self-made millionaire, does not like the recent change to Nintendo’s Youtube ad revenue policies. We reported on this yesterday. In short, if you play by a strict set of rules and cover the games that Nintendo wants you to cover, they will share their Youtube ad revenue with you. Otherwise, they will take all of your ad revenue, as they have been doing for the past few years.

PewDiePie thinks that the whole system is largely discouraging to new content creators, calling it a “slap in the face” especially to Youtube channels that feature Nintendo games exclusively.

“What Nintendo are missing out on completely is the free exposure and publicity that they get from YouTube,” he wrote.

“What better way to sell or market a game, than from watching someone else (that you like) playing it and enjoying themselves?”

A big problem with Nintendo’s proposed system is the pre-approval process. Videos need to be sent to Nintendo and approved before Youtube content creators can start making money off them. Unfortunately, the Youtube world runs on the nanosecond, and videos become old mere hours after they are posted. Since Nintendo’s approval system will take around 3 business days, most of the videos posted will be old hat by the time Nintendo allows them to get revenue.
