Pioneer Pioneers 400 GB Disc

Pioneer Pioneers 400 GB Disc

None

A few game developers have already complained that disc size is a bit tight for current gen consoles. Well, Pioneer has created a read-only disc that employs 16 layers of writable surface. That translates into 400 GB of total space. Best of all…it’s Blu-ray compatible!

The breakthrough came in the material used to produce the layered surfaces. According to an IGN report, “A normal BD uses a metallic reflective layer, while the latest from Pioneer instead utilizes a di-electric material.” This new material is what allows for so many layers on a single surface.

What’s more, Pioneer’s consumer sales schedule looks to put the tech out soon, make it writable/re-writable by 2010-12, and have it significantly upgraded to over 1 TB of data capacity by 2013.

Does this mean game developers will be free to beef up their games? Will it be cheap enough to do so? Will this give Sony an edge in console wars? We’ll have to wait and see.
