The new Power Rangers reboot seems grittier than ever before. There’s more dust and dirt, and seems like there’s more blood too. New trailers and Twitter posts have trickled out information, such as images of the coins the teenagers use to become the Power Rangers. But, one of the most interesting tidbits may come from a new promotional image shared on Twitter . On the surface, it seems like another shot of Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, but there’s more to it.
See Rita Repulsa’s staff in the shot? In the center of the head is a green coin. Other preliminary materials have shown the Red, Black, Pink, Blue, and Yellow Rangers with similar colored discs that allow them to transform. In the October trailer, Rita Repulsa hovers over the Pink Ranger when she’s in bed while we hear the line, “I’ve killed Rangers before.” The original series have always had a Green Ranger. Perhaps part of Rita Repulsa’s powers in this movie come from having that Green Ranger disc?
Personally, I’d like to see a different take on that. While it seems obvious that she killed the Green Ranger and took the coin to use the power to her own ends, wouldn’t it be neat if she was a former Green Ranger? Her outfit is entirely green. Seems far-fetched, unfortunately. Perhaps her attire is just green because she’s tapping into that mean, green power?
