PlayStation VR’s External Processor Detailed

PlayStation VR’s External Processor Detailed

More details have emerged on the external processor that will accompany PlayStation’s foray into virtual reality, PlayStation VR. Surprisingly, it’s actually a hefty chunk of hardware.

The box, which measures 140x140x35mm will contain an HDMI input and output. This is so the visuals can be fed through to a monitor for the device’s “social screen” capability. That should help the platform be a little less isolating. The front of the device contains two outputs that run to the headset and the cable has switches to control volume and the microphone.

It isn’t clear at this point what the external device is actually doing. Most of the work, in terms of rendering games, will be done by the PlayStation 4 itself. Still, with an onboard cooling system, a considerable size, and its own power supply, one could assume that the processor must be providing something substantial to the experience, right?
