Quantic Dream Unveils “Kara”

Quantic Dream Unveils “Kara”

None

Preceding Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream released a now-famous video titled “The Casting” to demonstrate its detailed motion-capture and facial animation technology. This year at GDC, they’ve unveiled “Kara,” a demo of their brand new tech that is, to put it bluntly, leaps and bounds above what they’ve ever shown before. A scanned model of actress Valorie Curry provides an incredibly believable and nuanced performance in a trailer that it feels appropriate to call “compelling” and possibly even “moving.”

And, according to Quantic Dream, this demo is a year old. The technology behind it has significantly improved since then. Kara, as the tech demo is called, will be available free of charge to all PlayStation 3 owners, though it’s not entirely clear what that entails, whether it’s merely the video or, more interestingly, an interactive peek at things to come. Whatever the case, Kara’s “performance” seems to bridge the Uncanny Valley in a way not even L.A. Noire’s detailed facial animation could manage.

Wherever Quantic Dream goes from here, it’s bound to be interesting.
