Redbox, the kiosk-based $1-a-day DVD rental service, has been testing the waters in select markets with $2-a-day game rentals featuring new and popular releases. Apparently, these waters have been favorable, as Redbox is expanding their game rental service to thousands of Redbox rental kiosks around the country. It will be interesting to see whether these low-cost rentals will take market share away from companies like GameFly, which feature larger selections (Redbox only keeps 8-10 games at each location at a time) but require a monthly subscription. In today’s market, where plenty of popular games take a single day to complete, Redbox may be on to something with its per-diem charges.  |
