RUMOR: GameStop Decides Physical Magazines Are Passé

None

Are you a PowerUp Rewards Premium member? Did you sign up for a year’s subscription of Game Informer with the understanding that you would be receiving one of the last physical gaming magazine in your mailbox each month, along with your ten percent discount/bonus on pre-owned games/trade-ins? According to an article on XBIGY Games, which cites a post by Reddit user GameStoppopotamus, the decision may soon be made for you:

“Word was handed down from on-high yesterday that we lowly gamestop employees are supposed to push the digital subscriptions. That was fine, I’m okay with that. About an hour later, our District Manager called us up and told us that we’re not just supposed to push digital subscriptions, but that we are now to automatically sign subscribers up for the digital subscription at the time of their purchase or renewal without asking them. ” (Emphasis in original)

He does state that it’s still possible to get the physical magazine, but the customer must explicitly request it, and must do so each time they wish to renew their card or they will be automatically enrolled in a digital-only subscription. The informant blames weak digital numbers and the comparatively high cost of printing and shipping a physical magazine for the alleged push.

Is the information accurate? If this is true, is the initiative nation-wide or local to this employee’s region?
