Scyther Evolution Guide: Stats, Moves, Type, And Location

Scyther in Pokémon Violet and Pokémon Scarlet

Scyther Evolution Guide: Stats, Moves, Type, And Location

Scyther (National Pokédex entry #0123) is a 1st Generation bug/flying type Pokémon that first appeared in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. Scyther’s design is based on a praying mantis and is a large, insect-like Pokémon. Its exoskeleton is predominantly light green and it features large wings, clawed feet, and two massive scythe-like blades for arms. The name “Scyther” likely refers to its massive and powerful blades. This Pokémon features three abilities: Swarm, Technician, and Steadfast. Steadfast is considered a hidden ability.

Originally, Scyther had no evolutions, but its unique bug and flying fusion made it a powerful addition to any trainer’s team. Scyther received its first evolution in 2nd Generation, Scizor (National Pokédex entry #0212). Scizor is a bug/steel Pokémon that originally required a special item to evolve. If trainers wanted to evolve their Scyther into a Scizor, they would have to use a Metal Coat.

For many generations, Scizor was Scyther’s only possible evolution. Pokémon Legends: Arceus changed all that with the introduction of Kleavor (National Pokédex entry #0900), an 8th Generation bug/rock type Pokémon. Like Scizor, Kleavor also requires an item to evolve. In order for a trainer to evolve their Scyther into Kleaver, they’ll need Black Augurite. While Scyther and Scizor are available in many Pokémon games due to their age, Kleavor is only available in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Violet, and Pokémon Scarlet.

Scyther, Scizor, and Kleavor all share similar stats. When Scyther evolves, its abilities, strengths, and weaknesses change, but it doesn’t necessarily become “more powerful” like many other Pokémon evolutions. All three have a base stat total of 500. The shift in Pokémon type and the distribution of points throughout their stats is what makes them unique to one another.

Trainers should keep in mind that Scyther may not need to be evolved to be powerful. Most Pokémon power up when they evolve, but Scyther simply goes through a transition from a bug/flying type to a bug/steel type (Scizor) or a big/rock type (Kleavor). All three of these Pokémon are good for different team compositions. The trainer’s ultimate goals for their team should determine which fits best for them.

Scyther’s base stats (before leveling up) will always equal 500. This is the same for Scizor and Kleavor. Scyther is capable of learning many different moves through leveling up, breeding conditions, and Technical Machines (TMs). Listed below are all of the moves Scyther is capable of learning in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. It’s important to keep in mind that these move lists can change from game to game, but since Scarlet and Violet are the most current Pokémon games, we’ll be using them as a reference.

Scizor’s Stats and How to Evolve Them

Scyther evolves into Scizor

©100% Guides / The Pokémon Company

Scizor is the 2nd Generation bug/steel type evolution of Scyther. Unlike most Pokémon, trainers cannot achieve Scizor by simply leveling their Scyther. To successfully evolve Scyther, the trainer must trade Scyther while holding a Metal Coat, resulting in a Scizor. Scizor’s base stats are equal to Scyther’s. As a steel-type Pokémon, Scizor has a higher base attack and base defense than Scyther. Scizor takes a pretty substantial hit to its speed after evolution, making Scyther a much faster and more agile Pokémon.

Scizor looks remarkably similar to Scyther. It still looks like an insect, but rather than green, Scizor’s exoskeleton is vivid red metal. Scizor still has wings and can still learn some flying moves, but it lacks Scyther’s movement speed. Scizor has two massive pincers for hands, rather than the deadly blades of its predecessor. Scizor’s abilities include Swarm, Technician, and the hidden ability, Light Metal.

Scizor’s Egg Moves are the same as Scyther’s, but Scizor does have the benefit of learning one extra move upon evolution. When a trainer evolves Scyther into Scizor in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Scizor learns Bullet Punch. Bullet Punch is a steel-type physical move that has 40 power and 100 accuracy.

Kleavor’s Stats and How to Evolve Them

Kleavor in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

© Astrosive / The Pokémon Company

Kleavor is Scyther’s newest evolution. First introduced in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Kleavor is an 8th Generation rock/bug type Pokémon. To evolve a Scyther into a Kleavor, the trainer needs to use a Black Augurite. Like Scyther and Scizor, Kleavor’s base stats equal 500. Much like Scyther, it excels in attack and defense. This makes sense for both Pokémon because one is steel and the other is rock, elements that are incredibly durable and hit hard. Kleavor has a relatively high speed in comparison to Scizor, though. Where Kleavor struggles with its base stats is its Special Attack.

Kleavor does resemble its predecessors fairly well. With the same general body shape, Kleavor simply has a brown exoskeleton made of rock. Unlike Scyther and Scizor, Kleavor doesn’t have wings. Its arms are two giant axes made of rock, making Kleavor an incredibly hard-hitting Pokémon. Its base abilities include Swarm, Sheer Force, and the hidden ability, Sharpness.

Kleavor’s Egg Moves are the same as Scyther’s and Scizor’s. That said, Kleavor does learn a unique move upon evolution. Once a trainer evolves Scyther into Kleavor, Kleavor learns Stone Axe, a rock-type physical attack with 65 power and 90 accuracy.
