Sony Details PS4 App Capabilities

Sony Details PS4 App Capabilities

In a post on the official European PlayStation Blog, Sony detailed what the brand new PS4 app is capable of. For those of you who missed the news this Tokyo Game Show, the PS4 App is a companion app that you can download on iOS and Android platforms. The app allows you to view your friends’ activities, tune in to game streams, send messages (both voice and text), alter your profile, check your trophies, and yes, even read the official PlayStation Blog (how meta is that.)

However, the coolest new piece of functionality is the app’s “remote download” capability. Basically, the app is connected to the PSN store. With it, you can buy any game you want wherever and whenever you want. More importantly, you can manage your downloaded games as well. After confirming a purchase, you can peg a game to start downloading, and your PS4 will immediately begin the download and install, even if it is in standby mode. That way, the game can be ready for you by the time you get home.

The PlayStation App will also include “second screen” function with some titles. Yes, this basically means that the PS4 app will also function just like the Xbox Smart Glass. Many of these second-screen functions are also usable on the PS Vita.
