Sony Electronics Going Through Layoffs

Sony Electronics Going Through Layoffs

With all the studio closure stories we write, it would be easy to think that the big AAA monsters of gaming are invulnerable to layoffs, but that’s simply not true. Sony, for example, has recently announced that they are going to be cutting a thousand jobs by the end of 2014. What’s the reason? “To maintain its competitiveness in an evolving consumer electronics market.” Uhm… maybe I should point this out, but if we keep trying to be competitive by cutting jobs, aren’t we all going to be left unemployed?

Luckily, it looks like Sony’s gaming division will be largely unaffected. Sony will be closing 20 stores in the United States, for example, and will be making massive shifts in its TV and Camera division. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Sony is planning to cut 5,000 jobs by the end of this restructuring.

“While these moves were extremely tough, they were absolutely necessary to position us in the best possible place for future growth,” Sony Electronics president and COO Mike Fasulo said in a statement. “I am entirely confident in our ability to turn the business around, in achieving our preferred future, and continue building on our flawless commitment to customer loyalty through the complete entertainment experience only Sony can offer.”
