Gamescom 2009: Sony Reveals PS3 Slim and Price Drop

Gamescom 2009: Sony Reveals PS3 Slim and Price Drop

None

Though anyone even remotely interested in the goings on at Sony’s game division knew about the existence of the PS3 Slim before E3 2009, the electronics giant decided to sit on the announcement until GamesCom 2009.

This morning, at the Sony presser in Cologne, Germany, the new hardware was officially revealed.  The PS3 Slim is 1/3 lighter and uses a 1/3 less power to run despite having full functionality and a 120 GB HDD. It also carries with it an affordable price tag of $299 USD, as the means of production have been honed in just three short years, allowing Sony to “pass the savings on to the consumer.”

So why would anyone buy the original? Because it will also get the price point of $299 (effective immediately), and the new Slim design won’t be available till September 1st.

Below you’ll find an image of the new console along with a video of SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton showing off the hardware.
