New PS3 Model On The Horizon?

New PS3 Model On The Horizon?

None

This news comes to us courtesy of the FCC, for which Sony has issued a filing for a new model number of the PlayStation 3. Rather than a new entry in the CECH-3000 series of hardware, which would probably indicate a new hard drive size on the existing “PlayStation 3 Slim,” the filing is for a pair of entirely new model numbers: CECH-4000A and CECH-4000B. Further, the FCC label position on the device seems to be different than on the current model of PS3.

This fits with rumors that an even smaller model of the PlayStation 3 is on the horizon, and with Sony’s behavior of retooling its hardware near the end of its lifecycle to be smaller and more compact than it had been previously. The original PlayStation, the PlayStation 2, and even the PlayStation Portable all saw smaller releases (the PlayStation Portable seeing multiple such releases, culminating in the UMD-less PSP Go and the Europe-only PSP E-1000). It is, in fact, unusual that the PlayStation 3’s hardware was refined so early, so a second pass wouldn’t be entirely out of sorts.

Here’s to hoping for a price drop while they’re at it.
