Sony Sells Over 35 Million PS3s; New Chipset Incoming

None

IGN reports today that Sony has sold 35.7 million PS3 consoles worldwide as of March 2010.

That means the PS3 only trails the Xbox 360 in terms of installed user base by around four to five million — a vast improvement over the last year — and has reached the halfway point when compared to Nintendo Wii.

What’s more, Sony is close to turning a profit on each unit sold thanks to their “Slim” redesign.  Now, according to a Sony spokesperson in conversation with IGN, Sony is poised to ship new PlayStation 3 Slim models in North America.

These PS3s, labeled “CECH-2101A”, have a smaller, more efficient 40nm RSX graphics chip.  According to the IGN report, “the smaller chip allows the console to run cooler, consume less power, and, presumably, help Sony reduce manufacturing cost of the system,” even further.
