Sony Trims Down Game Sharing

Sony Trims Down Game Sharing

None

I don’t know about you, but one of the big draws of the PS3 for me was the ability to share my downloaded content with four of my friends. Sure, I wouldn’t usually give my friends full games, but for bringing fighting game DLC to tournaments, this was a godsend.

Well, Sony has decided to take back this functionality, deciding that two systems are enough for sharing purposes. Announced on the PlayStation Blog today, Sony plans to allow you to activate only two PS3 or PSP systems at a time. If you want to bring your DLC to a third system, you will have to deactivate one of your other two systems before doing so. This will apply to every PS3 and PSP model including the PSP-1000, 2000, 3000, and Go.

Now, this will only apply to content purchased after November 18th, 2011.

At least Sony is going to make it easy to deactivate another system. Previously you had to use the system itself to deactivate your account. Either that or you had to call Sony for your one free total deactivation. Now Sony is launching a website which will allow you to activate and deactivate your PS3’s remotely. So you can bring your DLC wherever you want for tournaments, only to deactivate them when you get home. It’s a nice compromise and it certainly makes transporting DLC a bit easier than it was before, even though you can put it on fewer machines.

Still, this is bound to make some fans unhappy. Game sharing was one of the big selling points for the PS3, and now it’s just being yanked out from underneath us. This must be what it felt like to be a Linux user back when they took that capability away from the system as well.
