Sony VP Denies Losing Vita Support

Sony VP Denies Losing Vita Support

None

Earlier this week a Japanese publication called Nikkei posted a quote that had newly minted Vita owners slightly worried. The statement, which supposedly came from an unnamed source in the Japanese gaming industry, said that “Major Japanese companies [were] canceling all projects intended for the Vita and changing development to the 3DS.”

Now, if this quote turned out to be true, it could mean that all of the work that Sony had done to turn around the initially poor Vita sales had gone to waste. However, an apparently frustrated Scott Rohde, Sony Worldwide Studios’ senior VP, told Gamasutra that the quote just can’t be trusted.

“I did not see that quote, but you see extremist quotes like that all the time,” he said. “I mean, obviously, there is no way anyone could stand in front of a camera and say that all developers are changing focus from one platform to another, no matter what it is.”

Rohde has a pretty good point; the types of games being developed for Sony’s latest handheld are probably not the types that would end up on the 3DS. And even if they were, there are miles of red tape that go into producing a video game, so trying to convince the public that a large faction of developers are changing their focus is a bit ridiculous.

Rhode also said that he knows “many, many, many third-party developers and publishers are feverishly working on Vita titles, not just for now, but for the foreseeable future.”

So just relax. Your new Vita will have more games. Scott Rohde says so.
