Soul Calibur V Gets First Gameplay Trailer

Soul Calibur V Gets First Gameplay Trailer

None

The new age of 2D fighters is upon us. Great hits like Mortal Kombat and Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 are already here, and Street Fighter X Tekken is coming up on the horizon. So the announcement of Soul Calibur V, a 3D fighter, may not sound all that exciting. But Namco recently released a trailer for this title, and it just might be enough to win over some of the skeptics.

The trailer, released late yesterday in preparation for E3 next week, shows us the first glimpses of gameplay. The Soul Calibur V team previously said that the game was going to be fast, intuitive, and combo-heavy, and that’s exactly what the trailer shows. Moves are smooth, tight, and quickly transition into each other. Follow-up attacks are more open-ended, allowing you to do air combos like those you’d normally only see in a Marvel game. However, most exciting is the inclusion of what appears to be cinematic super moves, much like the ultra-combos from Street Fighter IV. Parries are quick, dodges are smoother, and the power-up from Soul Calibur II appears to be back, only much faster this time. The main character Patroklus seems to have some sort of Shoryuken. Even throws are faster and can be used as counters to sloppily placed attacks.

Thus far, it looks like Soul Calibur has been changed in every way a fast anime-inspired fighting gamer could want, which is sure to make a lot of people happy—and a lot of purists mad. Either way, we will give you more info when we see it at this year’s E3.
