Square Enix Chastised Over Misleading Ads

Square Enix Chastised Over Misleading Ads

When Final Fantasy XIII was announced to be coming out on the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3, Xbox 360 owners rejoiced at the prospect of getting to play the upcoming RPG epic. While the game came out on both consoles, the PS3 version was clearly sharper visually. However, this fact didn’t stop Square Enix from advertising the game using only footage taken from the PS3 version of the game, even in Xbox 360 specific ads.

This move has landed the company in hot water with a British advertising watchdog group (via 1Up, Telegraph). After receiving a complaint from a viewer, the Advertising Standards Authority compared the two console’s versions of the game side by side and ordered Square Enix not to show the misleading ads again. A spokeswoman for the ASA stated “We noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two – the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the XBOX 360. We considered that, because the ad promoted the game on the XBOX 360 platform, it should have featured footage derived from that console. Because it did not, and because we considered that the use of PS3 footage in the ad exaggerated the quality of the footage available on the XBOX 360, albeit marginally, we concluded the ad was misleading.” Square Enix responded to the ASA claiming they “did not believe any average viewer, or indeed avid gamer, would perceive any difference in the output unless reviewing the materially forensically.”
