Square Enix Trademarks Star Ocean

Square Enix Trademarks Star Ocean

With tri-Ace having been absorbed into the RPG behemoth that is Square Enix, it only makes sense that the company would pursue something tied to its most distinctive property. The publisher has filed a trademark for Star Ocean, a series last seen in 2010 with the PlayStation 3 release of Star Ocean: The Last Hope International, an upgraded port of the Xbox 360 version. It served as a prequel to the events of even the first Star Ocean.

That Square Enix is aiming to do something with the license is obvious, but just what they want to do isn’t entirely clear. The sci-fi RPG series has always had a strong cult following, but never really cracked the mainstream barrier. With Square Enix coming off of two straight financial quarters of losses, it seems odd that they’d take a chance on something big in such a niche franchise.

More likely, we’re looking at a mobile game, or a rerelease of a past entry in the series (perhaps a collection of the first two games for consoles). Either way, we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for any word from Square Enix itself.
