Square Releases Heroes Of Ruin Details

Square-Enix is well-known for its blockbuster RPGs. So when they announced they would be making a 3DS exclusive, we all thought we were going to see the next big portable RPG sensation. We were right, just not in the way we originally thought.

Today, the company officially announced the game, entitled Heroes of Ruin. Aside from being a Square-Enix JRPG, which is enough to get a good half of the RPG fanbase foaming at the mouth, the game will use the 3DS’ StreetPass and SpotPass and will include a host of other online social features. Put this all together, and you basically have a formula that is as addicting as digital crack.

Square Enix London Studio’s General Manager Lee Singleton explained, “With Heroes of Ruin we wanted to take the game experience beyond the confines of the console’s two screens. Nintendo 3DS’ online and social features allow us to do so much more than multiplayer, using both StreetPass and SpotPass to give players innovative ways of enhancing their experience.”

Players will be able to buy and sell items with people they meet on StreetPass through what Square calls the “Trader’s Network.” Essentially, it’s a store that updates its inventory each time it passes a player in public. SpotPass, on the other hand, will task players with finding rare items in the game, by locating a real-life wi-fi hotspot. Add the drop-in/drop-out four-player co-cop, and you have a recipe for a great portable multiplayer experience.
