Superhot VR Coming as an Oculus Exclusive

Superhot VR Coming as an Oculus Exclusive

Superhot is a game unlike any we’ve ever played. Its peculiar blend of stop-time, action-movie shenanigans and trippy narrative come together in a wholly unique experience that really got people talking. The developer (Superhot Team) doesn’t want the conversation to end, and it wants its cutting edge game running in virtual reality. Sounds pretty exciting, right? Except there’s a catch.

A VR version of Superhot is in development, but for the time being it’s planned to be an Oculus exclusive. This won’t be a simple port of Superhot with head tracking. Instead the team is working with Oculus to enhance the game for the platform and make it playable using the Oculus Touch controllers. 3D sound will be a big part of the experience as well, according to the studio’s official blog post. “Recently, we played around with holophonics type of sounds in Superhot . Thanks to that you will be able to for example ‘locate’ a passing bullet just by the noise it creates.” Of course, the HTC Vive uses tactile controllers very similar to the Oculus Touch, and is also capable of producing the same audio effects, but we won’t see Superhot on that platform. Whether or not you think peripheral-exclusive games should be a thing, that seems to be the way the industry is leaning – or at least, that’s what Oculus wants us to believe.
