Surprises Aplenty From This Year’s EVO

Surprises Aplenty From This Year’s EVO

None

So, fighting game fans, what did you think would happen at EVO this year? Same old story, right? Daigo Umehara wins Street Fighter, Justin Wong wins Marvel vs. Capcom, and everyone else goes home happy with their second or third place trophies, right?

Wrong!

This year’s EVO shook up the world of fighting games by introducing new champions all around. Daigo Umehara, Street Fighter’s famous champ, said earlier that he wanted to show us what “the best player using the best character looks like.” Then he earned a fourth place finish. The finals came down to Latif from Team Brokentier playing C. Viper, and Fuudo, a player from Japan, playing Fei Long.

Marvel finals were even more cracked out. Viscant ran a team of Wesker, Haggar, and Phoenix, showing us that Haggar is way better than we give him credit for by taking out PR Balrog’s team of Dante, Wolverine and Tron. The great Justin Wong fell to Viscant’s team earlier in the tourney.

Perhaps most awesome is the fact that there is a new MvC pro on the scene. Eight-year-old Noah made top fifty by taking out some well-known players in the scene. Running a team of Hulk, Sentinel, Wesker. It’s impossible not to cheer for a kid bursting onto the fighting game scene this young. Might he be the next Justin Wong?

Wait. Sorry. I almost forgot that Justin Wong lost this year.
