TGS 2011: New PS Vita Details Revealed

None

Are you hyped for the PS Vita? Well it’s time to get even more hyped! Over the weekend, a bunch of new PS Vita features were revealed, and they make the powerful little handheld seem even cooler. Here are just a couple:

  • Backward Compatibility – While the PS Vita doesn’t have a UMD drive to play all those old PSP games you have, it will allow you to download PSP games off of the PSN store. Sony says they are testing backward compatibility, and while they can’t say it will be 100%, they say there will be a very high compatibility percentage.

  • New Control Options for Older Games – Backward compatible PSP games will not only be playable on the PS Vita, they will be enhanced. The PSP only had one thumb stick, but the PS Vita will have two. So FPSes and third-person action games that used the face buttons to aim will gain an option to remap this control to the right thumb stick.

  • Region Freedom! – Importers rejoice, the PS Vita is entirely region free! That means you can import whatever crazy Japanese game you like and play it on your American Vita. Even better, it means you can purchase a Japanese system when it comes out in December in order to get it early, and you can still play American games.

  • External Battery – Unfortunately, the Vita only has about three to five hours of battery life on a full charge, and this is not enough for most gamers. Luckily, Sony plans to sell an external battery attachment that will extend the system’s battery life. Sure it sucks that we have to resort to purchasing a peripheral to make our handheld system actually portable, but at least it’s an option.
