The Old Republic Now Has Less Than One Million Subscribers

None

In the Star Wars universe, The Old Republic eventually died when Anakin went all emo. Well, it looks like life is imitating art as EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is slowly starting to die, except the cause is lack of subscribers, not Hayden Christiansen murdering a bunch of children.

Recently, it was announced that SWTOR’s total subscribers have dropped below one million. EA has said in the past that it needs 500,000 subscribers in order to break even, so at the very least the game is still profitable. But for how long?

The game launched at 1.7 million subscribers, though it rapidly dropped to 1.3 million shortly thereafter. And now less than 1 million? If this trend continues, then we may see the death of The Old Republic sooner than we had thought.

EA is trying to reinvigorate their MMO by making it free to play. EA Labels President Frank Gibeau said that well over 40 percent of players who left the game said they were turned off by the monthly subscription and that many said they would come back if EA offered a free-to-play model. Now that the game is doing just that , we’ll see if it will bring balance to the force or if it will push The Old Republic closer to the droid scrap heap.
